This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Hershey's
When we pulled into the driveway we noticed a package on the front porch steps.
No one was expecting anything.
“What could that be,” K asked.
It was addressed to me and the return address was an unrecognizable one in Pennsylvania.
Puzzled, I took the package to my office and opened it.
Inside, there were six bags of Hershey’s kisses and nothing else -- no note, nothing, just the kisses.
A wide grin spread across my face.
I felt as though I had won some sort of secretly wonderful (and slightly evil) lottery.
[Slightly evil because lately I’ve been feeling like Madame Fatty McFatSoMuch.]
I was about to skip gleefully to my husband’s side, present the bounty and suggest we eat chocolate for dinner (Fatty McWho?) when I vaguely remembered Blogher asking me if I would try out a few recipes that called for Hershey’s kisses.
[All I heard was, "Would you... CHOCOLATE?" and I accepted!]
Later that night, the details came by e-mail.
I was to visit the Hershey’s KISSES baking website, pick three recipes and try them.
[I am much better at eating chocolate than I am at baking, but I did agree to try.]
At first I reviewed the recipe choices with my children and husband in mind, wondering what they might like.
After a few moments of this familial altruism, I settled on a few recipes that sounded good to ME.
K is usually the holiday baker in The House of Joy and I'll admit that he makes fabulous apple pie.
The thing is, apple pies are good but they are not chocolate -- and as my late Grandfather often said, "If it ain't chocolate, it ain't dessert!"
I chose to make KISSES HUGS & KISSES Crescents, KISSES Macaroon Cookies and KISSES Candy Twists.
I should warn you in advance that I am one of those cooks who knows better than any recipe.
My cooking motto is:
“I Don’t Have to Follow ALL the Directions if I Don’t Want To.”
[It doesn’t always work in my favor, but it makes me feel IN CHARGE OF THINGS -- and that's what is important.]
As my first feat of KISSES Baking, I made the KISSES Candy Twists because I was thinking of last Christmas when I made an enormous batch of chocolate covered pretzels to give as gifts.
[You know I ate all of those pretzels, right?]
[Did I mention about Madame Fatty McFatSoMuch?]
Back to the Kisses.
Hershey’s sent me three kinds of Kisses chocolate.
There were two bags each of the regular milk chocolate kind; the chocolate meltaways; and the candy cane kind.
I had never seen the meltaway kisses before and I was wary of them because the bag says “velvety smooth chocolate center” and I assumed that meant that the center would be GOOEY which I generally don’t like.
Madame Fatty McFatSoMuch convinced me to try one anyway and... Oh. My. Word.
Meltaway KISSES are not gooey. No, no, no.
The are the bourgeois of the KISSES genotype.
They are the elite KISSES, the Hollywood red carpet walkin' KISSES.
They are the KISSES all the other KISSES want to be.
[And they must be removed from my house at once! Someone come get them now. Help me, please!!!]
The candy cane ones are minty with a white chocolate-ish base and because I am not a fan of white chocolate, I feel it is unfair for me to judge these KISSES.
You will have to try them for yourselves.
ANYWAY...
I laid the pretzels on a cookie sheet, melted one KISS on the top of each, decorated them and let them cool.
People, what’s not to like?
Pretzels + chocolate = home run.
I made some of these using the Candy Cane KISSES and they were DELICIOUS.
(You should know that the candy cane kisses melt faster than the chocolate ones, so cut the melting time in half if you do this.)
Next I tackled the KISSES Macaroon Cookies.
The recipe called for almond extract, but I didn’t have any so I used vanilla extract instead because... well because the rules of baking do not apply to ME.
[And also it made sense to me because I don't like hazelnut flavored coffee.]
[And if that line of thinking doesn’t make perfect sense to YOU, then you might want to take an Ibuprofen before reading on.]
It was only after I finished the actual baking that the macaroon recipe was supposed to yield four dozen cookies.
I made seventeen.
[No wonder my jeans are getting tight.]
I turned my attention to the KISSES HUGS & KISSES Crescents.
My husband did the grocery shopping and when I pulled out the tube-o-dough I discovered that he bought crescent ROUNDS rather than crescent rolls.
I stared at the coiled "rounds" noodling about how something shaped like a cinnamon bun could be retooled to approximate a French, chocolate-filled croissant.
I unrolled the crescent rounds into long strips and wrapped them around and around the KISSES.
I ended up with a cookie sheet full of what looked like little doughy Volkswagen Beetles.
[Nothing can stop this intrepid baker when she brings out the Fahrvergnügen!]
The HUGS & KISSES Volkswagen Beetles came out of the oven as perfectly lovely little brown rolls filled with chocolaty goodness.
Faced with 17 macaroon cookies, eight chocolate filled rolls and a pile of chocolate covered pretzels, I was thankful we had been invited to dinner at a friend's house -- five adults and five children put a mighty respectable dent in that chocolaty stash.
Whether or not these KISSES recipes become a permanent part of our holiday tradition, I can tell you one thing for certain - locating me will be easy this holiday season - just follow the trail of festive foil wrappers leading away from the bag of KISSES.

Finally, I leave you with a bonafide Holiday Tradition Recipe from the House of Joy... my Granny's Chocolate Pie recipe.
Enjoy!
GRANNY’S CHOCOLATE PIE
Pie crust
(This makes enough for 4 single pie crusts.)
Beat 1 egg and add 1 teas. vinegar.
Combine with 1/2 cup ICE water.
Cut shortening into flour until the consistency is like coarse cornmeal.
Add the rest and mix until the dough holds it's shape.
Granny usually covered it with a damp cloth and put it in refrigerator overnight, making it much easier to work with.
Chocolate Pie Filling
- 3 tablespoons of cocoa
- 1 cup of sugar
- 2 eggs (beat before adding)
- 1/4 cup of flour
- 2 tablespoons water
- 1/4 cup of melted butter
- 1 teas. vanilla
Add that last.
Bake 10 min. at 400 degrees and then 20 min. at 350 or until pie is almost set.
Do NOT bake until firm.

Our kids stay with one of their grandmas the day after Thanksgiving so that we can set the Christmas tree up and get the lights on it. I love watching the kids come home "to Christmas" and go through the huge tub of ornaments the next day to do the decorating. It is so much fun remembering where/from whom/when we acquired each ornament.
My mother always put out bowls of the red/green M&Ms, and the red/green/silver wrapped Hershey's Kisses. Guess I need to do that this year.
This tradition makes no sense, but while we're "trimming up" for the holidays, we listen to "My Name is Barbra" by (who else?)Barbra Streisand and also a really cheesy mix CD of 80's British Christmas Hits that I grew up listening to.
Also I want to incorporate as many chocolate related traditions as possible. Mmmmm, chocolate!
I like to put out greenery in large bowls with glass ornaments.
This is our son's first Christmas so we're starting some new traditions this year, but one thing we try to do is get a personalized tree ornament for everyone in the family with the year on it. I always have fun searching online for the perfect ones to get.
My favorite recipe is for peanut butter cookies with the Hershey's Kiss stuck in the middle. Great stuff. It is what I look forward to every Christmas.
I know a lot of people do this, but as children we were always allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve, and it was always a new pair of holiday pajamas that we would wear all day on Christmas. Even though we knew what we were getting, it was still exciting. My little boy is almost one, and this is his first Christmas. I think I will keep the tradition going!
Oh, and I also love the peanut butter cookies with the chocolate kisses. Soooo gooood.
We make a trip downtown to ride the holiday carousel, complete with a visit to the fancy gingerbread house display and a big hot cocoa treat. We also make special sugar cookies for Santa and decorate them on Christmas Eve.
We are starting a new tradition this year of opening our Christmas jammies on the night we decorate our Christmas tree!
I love driving around looking at lights on Christmas eve.
As children my husband and I always opened gifts on Christmas Eve, not Christmas Day. We're continuing that tradition with our children.

My favorite family Christmas tradition is eating Mexican food for dinner on Christmas Eve while wearing Christmas pajamas. Specifically we have chicken tortilla soup, taco salad, tamales, and of course chips & salsa. It is the perfect meal because it can all be made ahead of time. This way, we all get back from the Christmas Eve service, get comfy & festive in our PJs, and dinner is ready without any fuss! We do this with the whole family – aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, great grand kids- about 25 of us. As a result any time I eat tamales I always feel like it’s Christmas!
We are starting a tradition with our kids to give baby Jesus at present. We are going to give back to others instead of the focus being on just the stuff we get. I can't wait! It feels so good to help others in need and i want my kids to experience that.

I love chocolate dipped stuff at Christmastime...pretzles, oreos, ritz, peanut butter balls, etc....!
Making the powdered sugar, chocolate filled thumbprints that my family has been making as long as I can remember.
My favorite holiday tradition is making Latkes in the morning on the first day of Hannukah! With lots of powdered sugar on top :)

I actually use Hershey "Hugs" to make "Hug Cookies" (my own invention, but I bet others have created something similar). Put a bunch of the little Swiss Almond cookies they sell at Trader Joes (or any similar small cookie ((no bigger than a vanilla wafer)) would work) flat side up on a cookie sheet. Plop an unwrapped "Hug", flat side down, on each one and heat in a slow oven (around 200) until the Hug gets soft (but not melty) Remove from oven and top immediately with another cookie (flat side down) pressing gently until the hug makes a nice even filling between the two cookies. Yummmmm!
(Sadly, these will *not* help with the FattyMcFatSoMuch issues!)
One of my most favorite current holiday traditions is Christmas morning with my boss's family. It used to be Christmas Eve and Christmas morning but the 'children' are now in college so it's Christmas breakfast every year. I love those 'kids' and breakfast with my 'family'.

My sister and I have a holiday tradition called Baking Day. We get together in one of our kitchens (hers this year b/c she just moved and now has a huDge kitchen) and make batches of fudge, peanut brittle, cheeseballs, and pb cup cookies for our co-workers, neighbors, etc. Last year Sis burned her hand on the peanut brittle, so this year our goal is to escape w/o second degree burns!
my fav tradition is baking!!!

my favorite holiday tradition currently is Christmas cards! Believe it or not! I LOVE gathering all the addresses and getting the cards together to get out to friends and family. I also love getting all those cute cards too!!!

My favorite holiday tradition is baking with my husband and our girls. We make several different kinds of treats and then hand a bunch of them out to neighbors. It's so much fun!
Awesome !
I like the tradition of playing White Elephant with my family. :)
I LOVE those peppermint Kisses (it helps that I LOVE white chocolate). I've been searching for a recipe to make with those, instead of just sitting on the couch and inhaling the entire bag by myself!
My favorite holiday recipe is the classic: those peanut butter cookies with the Hershey's Kisses on top.
One of my favorite holiday traditions is going to the Festival of Trees during the first week of December every year here in Utah. All of the proceeds from the event are donated to Primary Childrens Hospital. And I love buying fudge and seeing all the creatively decorated trees. SO FUN!

I loved baking cookies with my grandmother. It was religion. She floored up the rolling pin and fit her old Danish aluminum cookie cutters into the dough with only tiny bits left over from each slap of gingerbread or sugar cookie dough. Sweet memories.
I love driving around with christmas music playing and looking at house all lit up with lights every year we do this and its cheap and fun!!

I love baking with my family. Every year on Christmas Eve we make gingerbread men--although it has devolved into "make your own weird and wacky animals and shapes out of gingerbread." Still, it is delicious and festive!
My favorite holiday tradition is that we always attend the midnight Christmas Eve service at our Church and then go home and open a single gift of our choosing.
jedoggett@embarqmail.com
My favorite tradition is the new PJ’s on Christmas Eve - I usually get my kids each two new pairs, but one must be footie pajamas (and matching is a bonus) and the footies are the ones I have them open to sleep in on Christmas Eve. Love it!
My favorite tradition is making a gingerbread house :)
Tradtions are: watching White Christmas, blueberry pancakes on Christmas morning, a big turkey dinner, and three gifts for each child representing the three gifts brought to Jesus.
My favorite Christmas tradition is probably a little unique to our family, but we all like to try to be the first to yell “YOU RUINED CHRISTMAS” at someone else, like for unwrapping a present incorrectly or taking a bathroom break in the middle of present opening.
I love making spritz cookies with the food coloring and the cookie gun (sounds so harsh, but I don't remember what it's called?) Peanut butter cookies with the kisses in the middle are a close second..
YUMMY!!
greglee87@gmail.com
i just love making holiday treats.
karina@ussery.net
Ooooo! Those sound SO good. My favorite holiday recipe actually involves Hershey's Kisses too...you make your usual peanut butter cookie dough (I could tell you my recipe but then I'd have to kill you) or buy some pre-made, then shape little "Kisses Volcanos" with the kisses surrounded by cookie dough and mmm...they're ready to come out of the oven when they start to "erupt" (trade secret: this keeps your childrens' eyes glued to the oven window while you wrap presents)!
I tweeted it! Here is the text of my tweet for anyone not on my "list:"

Yes my little ones still love their peanut butter cookies with an Hershey kiss in the middle. Ok they may not be so little anymore. Especially since they have given me Grandchildren!
My favorite family tradition that I did when I was little and still do as an adult and my son will do this year as it's the first year he's old enough is done on Christmas Eve's Eve. All the women and children on my mom's side of the family get together and bake dozens of sugar cookies. The adults do icing when they are done usually and the children do the candy decorating on top them. Then after sampling a few, and placing some on a platter for the family gathering the next day, we all package up the rest of them and take them to the homeless shelter for those less fortunate than us for their Christmas dinner.

My favorite family tradition is getting up way before anyone else and making homemade sausage biscuits, stacking them on a plate, and wrapping the plate tightly with aluminum foil and then wrapping all of that up in a big heavy towel to keep them warm. Then I wake everyone up, we open gifts, then head off to the kitchen to have sausage biscuits for breakfast. We have coffee, hot chocolate, and OJ too!
Our tradition is letting the kids stay up as late as they like. kc@mominthecity.com

Starting our own traditions is one of the best parts of having kids...we have many, like looking at christmas lights, going to our town's tree lighting, a boat show of Christmas lights at the bay, but my favorite is just getting cozy at home. A fire in the fireplace, kids in jammies, all of the Christmas decorations, and being together as a family. We love this time of year, and pondering our Savior's birth and all of the great blessings the past year has brought.

My favorite tradition is just one that my mother did for us as children that I have continued with my daughter. After she goes to bed and is asleep, I fill her stocking and place her extra special gift on her chair by the tree. I love to see her face on Christmas morning when she rounds the corner and takes her first look at that special present.
My favorite family tradition is watching 'It's A Wonderful Life' on Christmas Eve. Always makes me feel warm and cozy inside! :)

My favorite tradition is Christmas Eve church service and I love to start making breads.
I love peanut butter blossom cookies.. my favorite!
For the last quite a few years, I've been making buttery tree shaped cookies with my cookie press. They make me happy. And they help me really get into the Christmas mood. Yay!
One of my favorite Thanksgiving or Christmas recipes is for Pecan Pie. There's nothing special about this particular recipe except that my husband raves about it, and that's pretty fine by me! I'll make anything for him when it gets me such nice compliments. joyful.too at gmail dot com
My favorite tradtion is watching Christmas Vacation and eating all the wonderful foods at parties and seeing great friend.
Every years since I was two (and I am now 37) I have attended "The Nutcracker" ballet with my dad. When each of my children reached the age of two, they were also included in this tradition. We've seen "The Nutcracker" in NYC, Washing D.C., seen the Russian Ballet, and also seen home town versions in small towns wherever we have lived. Now the kids, who are 19, 17, and 15 can't imagine christmas without it.
Oh, and as for the chocolate, we have tiny chocolate rings on the tree every year. It wouldn't be christmas without those either!
my favorite family tradition is going to church on Christmas Eve and coming back to watch It's a Wonderful Life!

I make a wreath out of Hersheys kisses. I use silver foiled ones as the background, use the red and green ones to make green bells on it and red ones for the ribbons. Ive been doing this for a few years. It was actually my sons idea. At first I thought I was wasting delicious kisses but then I realized that sometimes something so wonderful as kissses is meant to be viewed and not eaten. Dont worry, I always bought extra to eat.

I found it in a magazine about 17 years ago and I've made it pretty much every Christmas since then:)
Our family favorite holiday cooking would have to be making lefse with grandma :-)
One of my favorite holiday traditions is on Christmas Eve we drive around and visit some of our neighbors and bring them cookies.

Our favorite family tradition it dubbed "the basket" Each year we think of a family in need. Then we fill a basket with food, goodies, and all contribute some money to put in a card. (My parents and siblings.) We then drop the basket on the door and run, trying not to get caught. I remember years that we almost got caught. Now that we are all grown, we still carry out the tradition and it's just as fun and helps capture the true meaning of Christmas.

We make lasagna on Christmas and it is so good. We also make some kind of birthday cake for Jesus and blow out the candles. :)
We love to eat Fried Turkey that has been injected with Cajun Seasonings! Yum, My dad's recipe is secret and is the best!
Even though we aren't Catholic, I love to go to Midnight Mass. With all the commercialism of Christmas, it reminds us of the true meaning. Then we come home and get to open one present each.
My favorite HOliday tradition is to go to late church on Christmas Eve to sing CHristmas songs and pass the flame of a coandle to all the congregation. We then sing Silent Night. It always gives me chills.
My favorite memory is of making treats with ny mom for the HOlidays and I have passed that onto my kids with making lots of candy trays to share. My personal favorite is Toffee, my kid are homemade caramels individually wrapped. They are old enough now to help and learn so they can pass it on!
thanks so much!

We always watch It's A Wonderful Life while we're decorating the Christmas tree.
My favorite tradition is our Christmas party! We invite all of our aunts, uncles, cousins etc at our house, creating an awesome chaos of 70 people in our relatively small house! We even have a band playing Christmas music and we eat and dance at the same time! My dad sneaks off at some point and comes back dressed as Santa Claus, handing out gifts to everyone.

My favorite tradition is to go site seeing at every Christmas decorated neighborhood; we’ve always drove around searching for the prettiest lit up houses and buildings. Always a treat to see in the night time.

One of my favorite Christmas recipes is my mom's recipe for homemade mounds bars (more like almond joy without the almond because it uses milk chocolate). We made those every holiday season when I was child.
My favorite tradition with my girls is making sugar cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

My all time favorite thing to do during the holidays is putting up the tree. No matter where I am or who I am with, it always results in good conversation and a trip down memory lane.

One family tradition we have is on Christmas morning when the ENTIRE family gathers at our house, all the grandkids take a turn reading a few verses of the Christmas story from Luke. This year was the first year my son was able to take a part and he did a fantastic job!

Every year we get at least one new ornament which could be store bought or home made. We like to make our own which is always fun. When we put up the ornaments we remember when and where we got them.
My favorite receipt is Chocolate Gravy and homemade bisquits.
My children do look forward to daddy making his infamous Chocolate Gravy.
I know it doesn't sound good, but hey! It is heavenly!

My mom used to make Chex Mix every year (in the times before you could buy it on the shelves!). I still remember how the house smelled when she made it - yum!
Also, I just so happen to have some kisses and some pretzels in the house... off to experiment!
My favorite holiday tradition is visiting the Christmas lights at Church of Joy.
We like to go drive around and look at Christmas light displays.

Favorite holiday tradition is our family gathering to decorate the tree. We all used to do it at my parents. Now hubby and I decorate the tree with the boys.
Another tradition is Christmas morning. My parents come over to watch my boys open presents and I serve a breakfast treat buffet (all cakes and cookies). Then we all go to my parents house to exchange presents there with my brothers and she makes a big feast including kielbase, salami and cream cheese and all of our favorite foods.26
